Mixed Media - To Break (into / out of) An Isolated System
2022
Instructor: Edgar Rodriguez
This installation is constructed from a series of daily objects found in the place of architectural education. The installation visualizes a vital and metaphorical system of the discipline. It questions on the discipline as an isolated system with redundant repeatatives, and calls for breaking the limitation of the discipline.
In details, the installation contains the following members: a monitor playing the videos of lectures and other academic contents, a printer printing repeatative architectural representations related to the content being lectured, scraps of physical model materials, photographic documentations of the acdamic scenes, and a huge pile of repeated and wasted materials produced automatically by the system. The technological devices along with other misused productions of the discipline on the side attemp to break the self-repeating system from outside.
By automizing the common devices and connecting them into a whole system in motion, part of the installation illustrates a continuously repeating and self-referencing machine. While its shape is analogizing the building of an architecture school. The remaining part of the installation derives the system to a more transdisciplinary visual representation by implementing the objects in unexpected positions. The whole automized installation is being monitored, documented and referenced by itself as part of its own motion. Its representation is calling for the transdisciplinary act to architecture as a discipline.
